Meet the New Director of the Division
Daniel L. Beckles, MD,PhD, FACS, FACC, FCCP

Dr. Beckles is board certified in both general and thoracic surgery, having served as founding Director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) a part of Houston's Texas Medical Center. His practice focuses on a collaborative, multi-disiciplinary approach to deliver personalized patient care and to utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever feasible, ensuring optimal outcomes.

He specializes in treating complex heart diseases and lung diseases. Before relocating to Louisiana, Dr. Beckles held academic positions as a clinical Professor  with Texas A&M University, Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program at Baylor Scott & White Health in Central Texas.

Dr. Beckles received his BS in Biochemistry and MS in Chemistry from Stony Brook University, and his Medical Degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship, residency, chief residency, and PhD in Cardiovascular Molecular and Cellular Biology at SUNY Downstate Medical/Kings County Hospital Center. Additionally, he finished his thoracic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas/Parkland Memorial Hospital and a thoracic surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital-Harvard Medical School.

As an academic surgeon, researcher, educator, and innovator, Dr. Beckles has authored peer-reviewed clinical and basic science papers, book chapters in cardiovascular surgery, and cardiac molecular biology. He holds two U.S. and international patents related to heart diseases. He is double boarded by the American Board Surgery and the American Board Thoracic Surgery, and is a fellow of several prestigious organizations, the American College of Cardiology, American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Beckles has received multiple awards for clinical, teaching, research excellence, has been elected into AOA, and was  named a Texas Super Doctors Rising Star in 2013, recognized as a Top Doctor in Houstonia Magazine in 2013 and 2014, and honored as a Houston Top Doctor in H Texas Magazine in 2014 by his peers.
